The upper part of the Machalilla National Park is one of the refuges and habitat of a diversity of animals and plants, some of them endemic, including howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, trogons, orchids, etc. Just 20 minutes from Puerto Lopez is located the Comuna El Pital, the starting point for the Guayacan de los Monos trail either by hiking or horseback riding.
