In front of the coast of Puerto Lopez and Machalilla National Park converge the two most important marine currents of the South Pacific, from the north arrives the warm current of El Niño and from the south the cold current of Humbolth, this natural event makes this area have a marine diversity of great importance, reasons for which are the last samples of coral reefs of the Ecuadorian coast, colorful fish, forests of gorgonians. 

Among the most representative fish we can find angelfish, butterflies, Moorish idols, parrots, rays, rainbows and in some months of the year giant manta rays and green turtles. The most important sites for deep diving are in the continental zone the Islote de los Ahorcados and Salango Island and in the area of Machalilla National Park La Isla de la Plata.
